Rajesh Garg

India

I completed my Bachelor of Engineering from N.I.T. Allahabad between 1981 and 1985, followed by an M.Tech from IIT Kharagpur between 1985 and 1987. During my studies, I was financially dependent on my father and received a monthly stipend of ₹1,000 during my M.Tech, provided through a college/ University Grants Commission. After completing my education, I appeared for the BPSC examination to join the Water Resources Department of the Government of Bihar. I subsequently worked as an Assistant Engineer in the government from 1987 to 2010. Over the course of my career, my monthly salary increased from approximately ₹1,700 to ₹46,000.

I got married in 1989, the same year my father passed away. I have two children, born in 1991 and 1994. I lived in a joint family with my three brothers and contributed to the household while supporting my wife and children. Although I was initially expected to continue working until 2023, I opted for voluntary retirement in 2010 because my government job required me to move frequently across Bihar, which was inconvenient for my family.

In 2011, I started working in my family's oil trading business, which had originally been established by my father and was continued by my younger brothers. I joined the family firm, Shankarlal Rajesboth, after leaving government service. The business provided an income that fluctuated according to market conditions, and I managed my earnings independently, saving and investing in land and stocks. Over time, my children completed college and became financially independent.

In 2022, I experienced heart problems after a blockage was detected in my arteries, and I underwent surgery to have stents inserted. I currently receive a state or public pension of ₹25,000 per month, which began in 2026. I had applied for voluntary retirement in September 2010, but incomplete documentation and a pending lease approval delayed the commencement of my pension until 2026, rather than October 2011. I believe I should receive the pension arrears for the period beginning when my pension should originally have commenced.
