Murugan

India

I started working very young after dropping out of school. When I was younger, I wasn't particularly ambitious and valued my personal leisure over all else. My usual week consisted of work, and my weekend was when I had time for myself. Being a big fan of cinema, I made it a point to go to the movie theatre every weekend. I spent most of my youth working day jobs that would help me sustain my lifestyle. This included a lot of piece-rate and daily wage jobs that I cycled through.

A turning point was when my mother passed away, leaving me alone to support my immediate family. I decided to prioritise stable-income jobs after this incident, and moved districts in hopes of better job prospects. I then wed my wife through an arranged marriage system and had two daughters, now with more dependents to provide for. We decided to move closer to my hometown to stay closer to my family. I worked as a painter for a few months, while my wife shuffled through day jobs involving household maintenance and babysitting. During my time as a painter, I had to make long commutes by bicycle every day. I met with an accident one day during my travel, prompting me to look for work that wouldn't require long journeys.

I then decided to work at a local milk export farm, where my main job was to clean and maintain the tanker trucks. I maintained a good rapport with my supervisors and coworkers here, and eventually earned a promotion to driver. Along with driving for company shipments, I would also occasionally chauffeur my supervisors during their personal journeys, and earn a day-rate for the same. About a decade before this interview, I decided to transition entirely to becoming a personal chauffeur, as it allowed me to maintain a healthier work-life balance and spend time with my family.
