Mahadev Gupta

India

Until 2015 his life was mostly busy with the daily work of milking cows early in the morning. His wife helped make ghee as pure as possible. Running a milk and ghee shop wasn't just a business; it was a daily commitment to the nearby community. Most sales used to happen during the festival seasons like Diwali, Holi, family birthday celebrations and weddings. Before everyone woke up his work would start early in the morning for him this was not just a work it was also a responsibility which he had to go each and every home and give the milk. Earlier he used to take his cycle with him for this work but later he used his self earned scooty which was the most amazing experience for him.

When you run your own small shop, there is no fixed salary at the end of the month. Some months business was great; other months, when prices went up or customers couldn't pay on time, money was tight. He had to learn how to stretch good months to cover the slow ones, keeping track of every rupee and putting whatever he saved straight back into the store.

He didn't have paid holidays, a company pension, or any backup plan. Everything depended on showing up, doing the physical hard work, and earning the community's trust day after day for twenty years. At last, new competitors came, and he and his whole family suffered. Later on, he accepted the truth and did not try to restart the business. Now he runs a small store below his house, but it is not as worthwhile as the earlier business used to be.
