Kanta

India

Mrs. Kanta had just given birth in 1980 but wanted to teach Hindi as she was passionate about the language and had already completed her B.Ed back in 1977. Hence, she joined Government Model Sanskriti Secondary School in Rohtak, Haryana, where she lived back then. She states that it was difficult for a woman to work as a properly paid employee at a reputed school, especially in Haryana. It was not encouraged, but she took this step with the support of her husband. She also mentioned that during those times, the class sizes were particularly big with around 60-70 children per class, and also mentioned how the manual paperwork for attendance, lesson plans, and exam papers was much more than what it is today for modern-day teachers. When her son shifted to Mumbai in 2010, she had to leave the school in Haryana where she had worked for almost 29 years and had become the head of the Sanskrit department as well. In 2010 she joined Mumbai Public School in Wadala and worked there for 6 years before retiring in 2016. Her journey speaks of resilience against societal expectations on women in that era, her passion for doing what she wanted and her determination to make a real change in the way teachers taught.
