Being from a conservative family, Gattu Devi got married at a very young age. She then worked as a housewife for several years. She then became the mother of three children. She had an eldest son and two daughters. Life was good, but something would soon change so many lives at once. Gattu Devi's husband passed away when their eldest son was 20 years old. To support her three children's education and make sure they received good care, she started working.
As she did not have any outside world experience, doing something while being at home was the only option that seemed possible. Hence, she decided to use her talent of being able to sew and embroider. She started doing cloth embroidery on a daily basis. Whatever money she earned from this she used for daily house expenses and children's care.
Now, Gattu Devi works as an Anganwadi worker in Rajasthan. She has to do basic work which includes taking surveys around the village and filling forms for different health information about people living in the village.
"Life mein hamesha utar-chadav aate rehte hai, insaan ko strong rehna hota hai" is what she says her motive is. While she faced so many challenges throughout her life, she never gave up. She worked for her children, her family and most importantly, herself.
Gattu Devi believes in living a life which is dignified and respected. She inspires us to keep having faith in ourselves during the toughest times of our lives.
