I am Arjun. I was born in 1969, and right now I live in Mumbai with my wife. We have two children together. Looking back, my life has mostly been about working with my hands, learning on the job, and slowly trying to build a stable life for my family in the city. When I started working back in 1996, I got into carpentry. At that time, I did not have any formal training or big skills, so nobody would give me a fixed job. I had to work as a casual daily-wage carpenter. Life is very uncertain when you work on daily wages. Some days you get work at a construction site, and some days you don't. Honestly, I do not even remember how much money I used to make back then because the pay was never fixed; whatever came in went straight into running the house day by day. Even though the pay was irregular, I treated those years as my training. For twelve years, from 1996 to 2008, I kept my head down and watched how the senior workers handled measurements, woodwork, and site work. Slowly, I learned the trade properly and gained real experience. I went from just doing basic labour to understanding how an entire interior site comes together. After 2008, things finally changed for me. Because I had built up strong experience, I did not have to rely on daily labour anymore, and I shifted to a new job in a better position. Right after that, in 2009, I started working in a permanent role as an Interior Supervisor. Instead of just cutting wood for a daily wage, my job became managing the site and looking after the interior work. I started this supervisor job in 2009, had a break during the pandemic, and returned to interior supervision in 2022. Over this time, my monthly income has ranged between 20,000 and 50,000 rupees. Having a permanent contract and a steady monthly pay changed everything for my household. My work income is our main source of support, and it allows my wife and me to manage our home and take care of our responsibilities without the daily stress I had in the 1990s. However, I do not get any pension. At my age, I know that my monthly work income is all we have to rely on, so as long as my health allows, I have to keep working hard.
